An Open Letter to New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon: Regarding the Human Rights Situation of My Son in China

This open letter has been sent to the Prime Minister’s email and has been confirmed received. Below is the full content of the open letter:

Dear Prime Minister Luxon,

My name is Lyu Zhanqiu, and I am a Chinese national due to political persecution by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). I am writing to you as a father, as a human rights advocate, and as someone whose family is being punished for their peaceful pursuit of justice and freedom.

In China, I was engaged in human rights activities that led to my persecution and eventual forced exile. Tragically, my son—who has done nothing wrong and has abided by all laws—has become a victim of collective punishment because of my actions.

Although he graduated from college and is a law-abiding citizen, he has been made unemployed, banned from leaving the country, and subjected to intense political and social pressure by the Chinese state. The long-term psychological toll of this repression has caused him to suffer from serious mental distress. His basic human rights are being violated, and his freedom has been stripped away—not for anything he has done, but because of who his father is.

What my son is enduring is not simply a family tragedy—it is a clear violation of international human rights norms. The use of “exit bans” and collective punishment by the Chinese government represents a systemic abuse of power. If this situation continues, I fear it may lead to irreversible psychological harm or even the loss of his life.

I humbly and urgently ask that during your upcoming visit to China, you raise this humanitarian concern with Chinese leaders. Your voice as the Prime Minister of a democratic and principled nation like New Zealand carries moral weight. I believe you can help ensure that my son’s case is heard, and that the Chinese authorities are urged to release him from unjust restrictions and allow him to leave the country.

This is a matter of life and human dignity. Please help my son regain his freedom, and help stop a tragedy before it is too late.

Sincerely,
Lyu Zhanqiu

These corrupt officials are just the tip of the iceberg of the Chinese Communist Party's corruption, especially the autocrat Xi Jinping, whose egregious human rights violations and persecution of innocent people are beyond description.
