On December 10, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This was the first international document in history to systematically articulate the principles of human rights.

In 1950, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared December 10 of each year as Human Rights Day to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and to promote global attention to human rights issues.
